Urban Transformation, History and Landscape
Since the economy reform and opening up in 1978, Chinese cities experiences important transformation from plan economic period to market economy period. More social, cultural and spatial issues are brought up with the institutional changes in transition period. And it is an important topic to identify and analysis the special characteristics in China transformation. As the building block of city, community becomes a key to understand the urban form changes under the framework of urban redevelopment including traditional city regeneration, Work Unit neighborhood renewal and urban village removal. Also, landscape and historical protection becomes a crucial issue challenging the urbanization process in China. It emphasizes ecology approach to solve the problem of air, water and soil pollution, which relating the health and quality of life for hundreds of millions people living in rural China. Combining the local issues in urban and rural ecology and landscape planning in an environment friendly way, is also important to shape China future cities. After the rapid growth, China economy achieves "the new normal" stage, how to cope with the slow economic growth and prevent urban decay and recession becomes a new challenge in the future. Focusing on the issues above, Urban Planning and Design Institute of BJTU will conduct research including historical building protection, urban and rural cultural heritage conservation, trying to promote sustainable regeneration and to improve urban vitality.
